How to Install WordPress

Last updated 1 November 2026

You can install WordPress on any Web Design Hosting SA plan in about five minutes using Softaculous, the one-click app installer inside cPanel. This guide walks you through the one-click method first, then the manual method for people who prefer to do it themselves.

Before you start, make sure:

Method 1: Install WordPress with Softaculous (recommended)

  1. Log in to cPanel.
  2. Scroll to the Software section and click Softaculous Apps Installer. You can also type "Softaculous" in the cPanel search bar.
  3. Click WordPress, then click the blue Install button (use Install Now, not the custom install, unless you know you need it).
  4. Fill in the Software Setup fields:
    • Choose Installation URL: pick https:// or https://www. and your domain.
    • In Directory: leave this empty to install on your main domain (yourdomain.co.za). Softaculous often fills in "wp" by default; if you leave it, your site will live at yourdomain.co.za/wp.
  5. Fill in the Site Settings: your site name and a short description. You can change both later in WordPress under Settings, General.
  6. Fill in the Admin Account:
    • Admin Username: do not use "admin". Choose something that is not your business name either.
    • Admin Password: use the generated password or a long one of your own, and save it in a password manager.
    • Admin Email: use an address you check. WordPress sends password resets and security notices here.
  7. Choose your language. Leave the plugin and theme options unticked unless you know you want them.
  8. Under Advanced Options, you can turn on automatic backups and auto-updates for WordPress core. Auto-updating minor versions is a sensible default.
  9. Click Install at the bottom of the page and wait for the progress bar to finish (usually under a minute).

After the installation finishes

Softaculous shows two links:

Log in to /wp-admin with the admin username and password you chose.

Method 2: Install WordPress manually

Use this method if you want full control, or if you are moving an existing WordPress site. If you are moving a site from another host, follow how to migrate your website to Web Design Hosting SA instead.

  1. Create a database. In cPanel open MySQL Database Wizard, create a database, create a database user with a strong password, and give that user All Privileges on the database. Write down the database name, username and password. See how to create a MySQL database in cPanel.
  2. Download WordPress from wordpress.org/download. It downloads as a .zip file.
  3. Upload the files. In cPanel open File Manager, go to public_html, click Upload and upload the .zip. Then right-click the file and choose Extract. This creates a folder called wordpress.
  4. Move the files to the right place. Open the wordpress folder, select all files, click Move and move them to /public_html. Delete the empty folder and the .zip afterwards.
  5. Run the installer. Visit your domain in a browser. WordPress asks for your database name, database username, password and database host. The database host is localhost.
  6. Create your admin account and click Install WordPress.
